Milwaukee Shenanigans

I was fortunate to get out to Milwaukee on two occasions this February. Milwaukee is so close to Madison, yet it seems so far away. I need to make an effort to visit more often.

My first adventure was with my friend Maggie. Our morning stop was to Colectivo Coffee which you can find more about on my instagram, @the_tacky_tourist.

Our main stop was the Mitchell Park Domes. I had never been there before, and I was astonished. There are three themed botanical domes: Show, Desert, and Tropical. The Show dome's theme at the time was trains and games. The colorful flowers combined with an assortment of games made it seem like a wonderland.

I stayed in the Desert dome the longest. It was so calming with the brown and dark green tones of the desert. I spent some time reading about all the various cacti, one of the most eye catching was the Living Stones.

The Tropical Dome was such a refreshing change of scenery from the outside -10F. Palm trees, coffee beans, and brightly colored tropical flowers continuously caught my eye as we walked through.

Milwaukee is known for custard so our dinner stop was Kopp's custard. It was a first time for both of us. I had previously been to Leon's but Kopp's was much larger in size. The burgers were also huge, making them hard to eat, but they were still delicious.

My second adventure of February was a get away with my partner, Mike. On our way to Milwaukee, we stopped at Holy Hill which I had seen many photos of, mainly in the Fall. I couldn't find a good spot to get a photo of the hill and the church. We ended up driving up to the church which had just closed up for the day. I hope to visit again one day for the full experience.

Our dinner was at Amelia's, a restaurant I passed last year and was so intrigued with its exterior, I just had to eat there. The prominent area is a bar and the rest is for folks looking for a bite to eat. For the first time in my life I ordered a prime rib, just to know, y'know? I ordered the queen, and it was huge! But oh so good. I definitely suggest it if you are there for the Saturday special. Our appetizers included mozzarella wontons which was also new to me and very good. Check out my Reels on Instagram for video at Amelia's!

The next morning I had my eye on Honey Butter Cafe for breakfast. I chose well. Their focus is loukoumades (honey puffs) which were brought to our table as soon as we sat down. There are regular with honey and some with fancy toppings, but the honey is more than enough. We started off by having crab cakes. Absolutely delicious. I ordered a S'mores brioche french toast, which ended up being bigger than my tummy could handle. Mike had hash and instantly fell in love. And he knows his food.

Since the Wisconsin State Fair was cancelled in 2020, the Fair has been entertaining locals by selling cream puffs at the fair. We were in town just in time for their last event, selling chocolate and strawberry cream puffs. We picked them up via a wonderful curbside pickup and enjoyed them once we got home.

I am so excited for my next day trip to Milwaukee! Is there some place you think I should visit? Let me know on my social media or by emailing me (thetackytourist@yahoo.com) and I will add it to my bucket list!

Happy Trails!
